The 2011 Toyota Venza is a strange creation, one rife with contradictions and difficult to properly define. There is one thing we're sure of, though; it makes a great family vehicle.

The Venza has the basic body dimensions and interior space of a midsize crossover SUV -- think Ford Edge or Nissan Murano -- but with one significant exception: The Venza is nearly 4 inches shorter in height than its rivals, and technically this puts it in the same camp as a wagon, not a crossover. Its wagon-style dimensions also make the Venza feel more like a car from behind the wheel compared to Toyota crossovers like the Highlander and RAV4. The Venza puts an emphasis on comfort and ease of driving.

This is one of the best -- and possibly the top -- V6s in the crossover class. If that weren't incentive enough, going with the V6 gets you even bigger, 20-inch wheels.

In the front cabin, the Venza is filled with a variety of innovative storage solutions. By placing the shift lever up high on the center console, space opens up for several storage bins.

Certainly, the 2011 Toyota Venza is a strong contender whether you're in the market for a wagon like the Subaru Outback or a midsize crossover like the Edge, Murano and Chevy Equinox. The Venza is also a more likable and stylish choice than the similarly conceived Honda Accord Crosstour. When a vehicle is such an indefinable oddity, it's bound to draw comparisons to such a diverse range of vehicles, but against them all, the Toyota Venza stands tall on its big wheels.

Parking lot maneuvers couldn't be easier, however. Both engines provide ample power to move this sizable vehicle, although the V6 is obviously the way to go if passing folks on the highway takes precedence over achieving the best fuel economy.

Plugged In is a new program for Progress Energy's North Carolina and South Carolina customers, designed to help our area move forward with tomorrow’s plug-in vehicles today.

If you qualify, Progress Energy will install a 240-volt, Level 2 charging station at your home. The program runs until April 2013, during which time the company will monitor the data from the station, plus be responsible for any maintenance and servicing. After that time, the station becomes yours to keep.

Eligible residential customers in North Carolina and South Carolina now have the opportunity to participate in Duke Energy’s Charge Carolinas pilot program. Charge Carolinas provides qualified participants with a 240-volt, Level 2 charging station, installation and service for the duration of the two-year pilot.

How the pilot works:

Duke Energy will install a 240-volt, Level 2 charging station at the homes of eligible customers.*
We will also service the charging station for free for the duration of the pilot program.
We’ll remotely access information to better understand collective charging habits and the impact on the power grid. This way we can better prepare for increased use in the future.
When the pilot ends, participants will be able to keep the charging station for only $250.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have two power systems, an internal combustion engine and a battery which can be re-charged from electricity. These vehicles use both gas and electricity. Some are designed to operate in all-electric mode until the battery is fully discharged, with the gasoline engine then taking over. The Chevrolet Volt is an example of this type of vehicle. Others will operate with both power systems at the same time to reduce gasoline usage, much like the planned Toyota Prius PHEV.

It's Called OCD for Business

When I go out into the community I cannot help but compare other business models to the one we have at Rice Toyota. All kinds of things-parking lot layouts, checkout methods, greeters, salespeople, uniforms, email collection tactics, waiting area layouts, and yes it is annoying to never be able to relax even while at Disney World. (How do they get their employees to be so nice and no, its not the money.)

For example, when I go to the Apple store at Friendly Shopping Center I get really excited about not having to stand in a checkout line because their associates carry credit card swipers and they email you your receipt. Excellent! Thank you Apple. Now I think "I love this, how could Rice Toyota incorporate this?" And yes this is the R&D stage in my special projects file, right in the que behind offering manicures on Monday's for Lady's Day...

Anyway, I digress, so back to How to Get The Best Service on Your Vehicle: when I get together at parties or anywhere with people outside of work, I hear the same questions about vising a car dealership:

Okay you know how you go to see one person to cut your hair? Why do you do that?

Because you know that seeing the same stylist means you will get the same cut/color look that you want because your stylist knows you. Your stylist knows if you like highlights around the face or a full foil. They know you will never, ever, no not ever, consider bangs again. Yes, the salon is nice, but the person who is actually mixing up the color and wielding the scissors is who matters. Thus, you wouldn't dream of going to the same salon and seeing a different stylist every 4-6 weeks.

So I know millions of men read my blog and those millions are saying "What? That's ridiculous. I am a guy, I am bald, I use clippers, its just hair, who cares? I don't get your reference I thought this article was about bartenders who cut hair and change your oil." Okay guys, you know how in college, or now, you like to go to one bar because the bartender knows you and he would never hand you anything pink and fruity with an umbrella in it? Okay, good, glad you are on board now.

It is the relationship you build with your stylist/bartender that shapes your experience, they know whether your salon/bar is your chance to de-stress and reflect quietly or whether you want to just vent or tell jokes. See where I am going with this? Your hair stylist/bartender knows what experience to offer you because they know you personally.

So, next time you go in to have your vehicle serviced take a few seconds to get to know the person (they are called service writers for those taking notes) who greets you and is asking you all the questions about mileage on your car. Get their business card. Next time you need another oil change call and request that same service writer. The relationship you build will get you in and out in the time you need with the level of service you desire.

TORRANCE, Calif., October 20, 2010 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it will conduct a voluntary Safety Recall involving approximately 740,000 – 2005 through 2006 Avalon, 2004 through 2006 Highlander (non Hybrid) and Lexus RX330, and 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 vehicles sold in the United States to address the possibility that a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.

This action follows an announcement made by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan on October 21, 2010 (Japan).

The Toyota genuine brake fluid used during vehicle assembly for vehicles sold in the United States contains polymers. The polymers act as lubricants for certain brake system components. If during vehicle maintenance, brake fluid is used that does not contain such polymers or only small amounts, a part of the internal rubber seal (brake master cylinder cup) located at the end of the brake master cylinder piston may become dry and may curl during movement of the piston. If this occurs, a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.

If the brake warning lamp has illuminated and the vehicle continues to be operated without refilling the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir, the driver will begin to notice a spongy or soft brake pedal feel and braking performance may gradually decline.

Owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning in early November 2010. Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the brake master cylinder cup with a newly designed one at no charge to the vehicle owners.

1. What is the problem with the 2010 Prius?
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) in the 2010 model-year Prius, in normal
operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control
system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some owners have reported
experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the
brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is
activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.
2. How is Rice Toyota responding to this Prius issue?
Rice Toyota has run a list of all our customers who own a Prius affected by this recall. We are calling each and every one of them, if we cannot reach them by phone we will send them an email. What is the problem that could cause accelerators to stick and led to the recall?

The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable.

This friction device includes a “shoe” that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation. Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open.
How does a steel reinforcement bar solve this problem?
The steel reinforcement bar will reduce the surface tension between the friction shoe and the adjoining surface. With this reinforcement in place, the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick is eliminated.

How does Toyota know that this solution will be effective?

Nothing is more important to Toyota than the safety and satisfaction of our customers, and we have high confidence in our solution for fixing our customers’ vehicles. We have confirmed the effectiveness of the newly reinforced pedals through rigorous testing on pedal assemblies that had previously shown a tendency to stick.

When can I get my vehicle fixed?

We are beginning to contact customers to let them know when to bring in their vehicles for the fix, and some of them will be notified as early as this week.

At Toyota, our highest priority has been to quickly and effectively address the needs of owners of affected vehicles. Parts to reinforce the pedals are already being shipped for use by dealers.

Toyota Update Regarding Recalls

Nothing is more important to Toyota than doing the right thing for our customers -- and restoring their confidence in the safety of our vehicles. We deeply regret the concern that our recalls are causing for our loyal customers, and we are making an all-out effort to develop and implement effective remedies as quickly as we can.

Our highest priority is to fix the accelerator pedal problems for our existing customers. We want to reassure Toyota owners that instances of sticking pedals are rare and generally do not occur suddenly. Toyota is currently in the process of recalling vehicles to remedy the issue of pedal entrapment and we have begun sending instructions to customers about how we will fix their vehicles. Toyota announced it will initiate a Safety Recall for potential floor mat interference with the accelerator pedal.
The condition involves the potential for an unsecured or incompatible
driver's floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it
to get stuck in the wide open position. Toyota has determined that this
defect does not exist in vehicles in which the driver side floor mat is
compatible with the vehicle and properly secured.

On January 27, 2010, Toyota amended the Defect Information Report (DIR)
filed with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) to

Yesterday we posted a copy of the Toyota press release regarding the stop sale and delivery announcement. Attached is the TMS Dealership notification letter that provides greater detail on specifically which vehicles cannot be delivered until they have been remedied.

To be clear, North American vehicles equipped with accelerator pedals manufactured by CTS are the only vehicles included in the stop sale and delivery.

All vehicles equipped with Denso produced gas pedal assemblies can be sold regardless of where they were produced.

It is important to note that the North American Camry is the only series that was produced with both CTS and Denso accelerator pedals and therefore needs to be inspected to determine if they are equipped with Denso pedals prior to being sold.

Determining whether the Camry is equipped with a CTS or Denso accelerator pedal can be done with a visual inspection without removing the pedal. Denso pedals are constructed of all black plastic versus the CTS pedal which is made of metal. The CTS pedals have shiny metallic components on both sides at the top of the arm which are clearly visible from the footwell.

Register. Complete the official registration form and return via email, fax or mail. Registration must be received and confirmed prior to fishing in your first contingency paying event. Street Image built the Ultimate Venza by taking a 2009 Toyota Venza as the starting point. The exterior modification of the Ultimate Venza includes an aggressive custom body kit that includes a unique Toyota/Billabong exterior paint design, fender flares and alloy wheels. A custom roof rack was designed and installed to accommodate surf, snow and wake boards. The roof rack lowers to make it easier to load surf boards and also features a hidden cargo rack that extends from the rear bumper for skis and snow boards. Street Image also installed a front and rear hitch receiver and Grinch Winch to pull wake boarders into waves or snow boarders and skaters across flat land to a jump or rail. Finally, large Enkei wheels with Nitto tires and a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) big brake kit were added to provide superior traction and stopping power when driving off the beaten path or to the beach.

The interior of the Ultimate Venza utilizes genuine Billabong materials and construction. The seats are custom upholstered with wet suit materials and incorporate Billabong’s latest design scheme and colors. The headliner is an artistic color collage depicting Billabong athletes in action.

Additional Ultimate Venza interior modifications include “living” features that will allow the athletes to conduct many everyday endeavors while on the go or at competition sites. The Greensboro Jaycees revitalized the city holiday parade this year, and neither wind or rain could dampen the Holiday Spirit!

It was held on a Saturday, December 5, 2009 at noon. The route started at 401 N. Greene Street and ended in front of the Greensboro Children's Museum.
